I see a white sail
skipping 'cross a blue bay
and I say Someday I Will
I see a young man
strumming on a green guitar
and I say Someday I Will

I was reading the NPR website today and stumbled across a story of Zac Sunderland. I read about him a while ago at Sailing Anarchy. He is planning to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world. His departure date was just set back due to engine troubles and now plans to take off June 14th. The trip he is going to take will be record making. No other person has completed the circumnavigation before the age of 18. He will have a lot to deal with alone. Pirates (Not Captain Jack, more towards Rambo), heavy weather, HEAVIER weather, equipment failure, and the mental stresses (Talking to the invisible Gorilla that you let take the helm during the midnight watch) are going to be staggering. I am extremely impressed with his drive to take on this trip. I am jealous of his abilities and the bravery (sheer gonads) that sailing solo for that distance takes. In the back of my mind I wonder if he will pull a Moitessier. If almost through the 40,000 mile battle he will choose to finish the record or continue his sail. Chart a course to a southern island and ditch the modern world for the civilized life. It might not be record worthy, but records aren't permanent. Someday some little snot nosed kid will do it at the ripe age of 15. I have a passion for the ocean and an ever-expanding love for sailing, but I think I lack the testicular fortitude to take his trip. I know I am not in the minority... less than 300 people have ever completed Zac's goal.
I look forward to reading about his sail and keeping up with his progress. He is in my prayers and I hope Mother Ocean looks favorably in his direction.
Here is his page and a link to his blog.
